A new survey study in the US reveals that a majority of young adults in the country – including three-quarters of African Americans and nearly half of whites - regard President Donald Trump as an “illegitimate president.”
According to the poll conducted by GenForward and reported by the
AP on Saturday, overall 57 percent of American young adults view Trump's presidency as illegitimate, also including large majorities of Hispanic- and Asian-Americans and 47 percent of white respondents.
The breakdown of the results further indicated that 53 percent of young white respondents consider Trump as a legitimate president, though a majority in that group, about 55 percent, view his job performance negatively.
By and large, the survey shows that 22 percent of young adults approve of the job Trump is doing as president, while 62 percent disapprove.
The poll further indicated that eight in 10 young people believe the US president is doing poorly in terms of the policies he has put forward while seven in 10 have negative views of Trump’s presidential demeanor.
The GenForward Survey of 1,833 adults aged 18-30 was conducted from February 16 through March 6 by the Black Youth Project at the University of Chicago with The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, focusing on how race and ethnicity shape how respondents experience and think about the world.
The legitimacy of Trump as the US President has earlier been questioned by Democratic Congressman John Lewis of Georgia, who insisted that the Russians facilitated Trump’s unexpected electoral victory, an allegation denied by Trump and Moscow.
